In this project, the focus was on developing a solution in close collaboration with the target group. The project framework required using Arduino (a microcontroller) to create a tangible prototype that could use sensors to capture sensory input that people may not notice or have difficulty perceiving. We chose to work with people across the spectrum from deaf to hearing impaired, and in collaboration with them we developed the prototype Hysj.

The process followed an iterative lifecycle with multiple rounds of data collection, prototyping, and evaluation. Users were involved throughout, providing valuable feedback along the way.

We placed strong emphasis on the prototyping phase, starting with several low-fidelity prototypes to explore different concepts early. As these prototypes mainly consisted of sketches and simple wireframes, it was easier to evaluate them critically and move forward with the most promising ideas. Gradually, we moved toward a functional but still simple prototype, built around a cardboard box. This version was tested with users, who tried it out and provided feedback on its functionality—giving us crucial insights for improving the final prototype.
